What Gear Do I Need to Get Started at the Gym?

If you're just starting your fitness journey and staring at your wardrobe wondering, “What do I even wear to the gym?”, you’re not alone. I’ve coached loads of people through their very first session — and one of the biggest early hurdles is feeling unsure about what gear you need.

Let me clear it up for you: you don’t need fancy stuff to get started. What you do need is comfortable, reliable gear that helps you feel confident, safe, and ready to move.

Here’s a beginner’s breakdown of exactly what to bring — and what you can ignore — when you’re getting started at the gym.

1. Comfortable, Breathable Workout Clothing

Skip the fashion parade — your gym outfit doesn’t need to be trendy. But it does need to be:

  • Breathable – helps manage sweat and keeps you cool

  • Stretchy – so you can move freely

  • Supportive – especially important for women (sports bras are a must)

🔹 Top tip: Avoid 100% cotton — it traps sweat. Go for synthetic blends or moisture-wicking fabrics instead.

2. Good Quality Trainers

Your footwear matters. Whether you’re lifting weights, walking on the treadmill, or taking a beginner class, a solid pair of trainers will:

  • Support your joints

  • Improve balance and stability

  • Prevent injury

You don’t need high-end gym shoes, but aim for something with flat soles if you’re planning to lift (e.g. squats or deadlifts). Running shoes are great for cardio but can be too cushioned for heavy lifting.

🔹 Pro tip: If you’re doing a bit of everything, go for a general “cross-training” shoe.

3. Reusable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is key — especially when you’re sweating more than usual. A good water bottle:

  • Saves you from queueing at the water fountain

  • Reminds you to drink more throughout your session

I recommend a bottle that holds at least 750ml, and ideally one that’s easy to sip from mid-set.

4. Towel (Small & Quick-Drying)

Some gyms provide them, but many don’t. Having your own gym towel:

  • Shows respect for others (wipe down benches!)

  • Helps you manage sweat mid-session

  • Keeps your hands dry for grip during lifts

Go for a microfibre towel — they dry fast and don’t take up much room in your bag.

5. A Basic Gym Bag

You don’t need a duffle bag the size of a suitcase — just something lightweight that holds:

  • Clothes and shoes

  • Water bottle

  • Towel

  • Post-workout snack (optional)

  • Gym card or ID

🔹 Optional extras: Deodorant, a spare t-shirt, and a lock if your gym uses lockers.

6. Headphones (if you like music)

Music can boost motivation massively. If it helps you focus or eases gym anxiety, pack a reliable pair of wireless earbuds or lightweight headphones. Just make sure you stay aware of your surroundings — especially in free weight areas.

7. Your Phone (for Guidance & Accountability)

I recommend my clients use their phone for:

  • Tracking workouts

  • Logging progress

  • Using guided plans (like the ones I build for clients)

  • Music or podcasts

Just don’t let scrolling distract you. The phone should support your session, not sabotage it.

8. Confidence, Curiosity & a Plan

Okay, this isn’t “gear” in the traditional sense — but hear me out.

When you walk into the gym for the first time, what you really need is:

  • A little confidence to know you belong there

  • Some curiosity to try new things

  • And most importantly, a simple plan that shows you what to do

That’s where I come in. My coaching provides step-by-step sessions you can follow from day one, even if you’ve never touched a weight in your life.

Lou’s Verdict

You don’t need all the gear to get started — you just need the right basics to feel comfortable and supported. Don’t let the fear of not looking the part stop you from changing your life.

What matters most is that you show up, stay consistent, and build momentum — and trust me, nobody’s judging your outfit. Everyone in the gym is focused on themselves.

So pack your bag, prep your mindset, and take that first step. Your future self will thank you.
